"IN THE MEMORY OF CAROLINE DEWHURST WHO Died June 7th 18__ Aged 2 years 7 months Alas and is my daughter dead And is her nobler spirit fled She bid a long adieu to all below To pain and sickness' sorrow' grief and woe Then why should I complain at god's decree Since death but set her trembling spirit free And but fulfill'd his deadful mandate here That she before her maker might appear Methinks I see her joyful spirit stand Smiling in innocence at god's right hand And all the bright angelic host above Rejoice to see her clad in robes of love So like the blushing rose in morn of spring Mipd ev the hour of noon-tide heat set in. In strength of body and in prime of hope By death cut down to wither and droop But stop my muse Those blissful days are over Her lovely face these eyes shall see no more Nor ever more press to my throbbong heart That form that now on no pleasure can impart Thus fell my hopes the comfort of my life Short was the time I had to call her child three year had scarce elaps Oh cruel death That thou shouldst snatch my darling from my breast Strike on grim slaughter strik thy ruthless dart. Destructive tyrant strik me to the heart No joys on earth for me now remain Since thou my life my joy my all hast slain. Farewell. Caroline thrice again Farewell. Till I am raised.
