Half-length portrait of Samuel Appleton (1766-1853). Appleton is wearing a black coat, white waistcoat, white stock, and white collar. Appleton is seated with his left elbow resting on the scrolled arm or back of a red upholstered chair. Red curtain draped in background. Oil on canvas. Gilt frame. Copy of the original 1818 portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart Newton (1794-1835) in the collection of Harvard University. Copy artist "H.G." is unknown.
