Half length portrait of Abigail Adams seated, wearing lace cap and kerchief and shawl trimmed with fur. Red curtain in background and upholstered seating furniture. Rectangular, molded gilt and gesso frame. Note attached to rear reads: "Mrs. John Adams/ painted from life by Miss Lydia Smith/ afterwards/ Mrs. Jon a Russell/ GRRR." Second note reads: "Abigail Adams/ Painted from life by/ Lydia Smith Russell."
