This daguerreotype shows four generations of Quincys, a family as well known in the nineteenth century as the Kennedys are today. Each of the Quincys shown here was named Josiah. The seated figure on the left, Josiah Quincy III (1772-1864), was a mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, and president of Harvard University. To the right sits his son, Josiah Quincy IV (1802-1882), an author and another mayor of Boston. At far right is Josiah Phillips Quincy (1829-1910), also an author, who added his middle name to differentiate himself from the others. The baby, Josiah Quincy V (1859-1919), grew up to be the third mayor of Boston to bear the name.
