Although the form of this piece mimics a teapot, its large size and the lack of a strainer at the base of the spout make it a punch pot, used for serving an alcoholic beverage made from spirits, fruit, sugar, spices, and water. Although punch was a popular drink for most of the eighteenth century, punch pots were only fashionable for about thirty years, from around 1750 to 1780. This example, with its wonderful cream color and intricate entwined overhead handle, is typical of the wares produced by potteries in Leeds, England. Designer Henry Davis Sleeper chose it to decorate his home at Beauport, the Sleeper-McCann House in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
