Tilt-top tables and stands were standard items in New England homes. Quite portable, they could be used anywhere in a room as work, dining or tea tables or stored against the wall with their tops up. This is a particularly handsome example. The urn-shaped pedestal is well turned, and the serpentine top is embellished with inlaid fans in the corners and crossed sprigs in the center. Historic New England owns a desk and bookcase with the identical fan and sprig inlay on the doors. Both pieces descended in the Barrett family of New Ipswich, New Hampshire.
