Elegant Embellishments: This stepped-down Windsor side chair is a finely painted example that survives in excellent condition. The rings of the bamboo turnings, highlighted in slate blue, and the gilt peacock feathers on the crest rail make this common form exceptionally elegant. Elements of the chair are closely related to those on examples marked by the Wilder family, a prominent group of New Ipswich chair makers working in the first half of the nineteenth century.
