Zedekiah Belknap spent his earliest years in central Massachusetts where his father worked as a tailor, before the family moved to Vermont to take up farming. Zedekiah was the only member of his family to be sent to college. He attended Dartmouth, graduating in 1807, and with a degree in theology preached for a few years. His earliest known painting is signed and dated 1810. There is no evidence that Belknap ever had professional art training, but he was apparently quite a popular portrait painter in the small Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts towns through which he traveled during a career that spanned nearly forty years. About 150 signed or attributed likenesses have been discovered to date. [Elizabeth R. Mankin, "Zedekiah Belknap" Antiques Nov. 1976: 1056-1070]
