"Cherished Possessions": Henry Bowen hired Thomas Brooks of Brooklyn to build the furniture for Roseland Cottage, his new house in Woodstock, Connecticut. This settee and side chair are among the Gothic furnishings that Bowen ordered, which included a second settee, a window seat, a footstool, a center table, a number of chairs, a hall stand, and a cottage bedroom suite. The Gothic style, with its use of pointed arches, trefoils and quatrefoils, and emphasis on verticality, derived from church architecture and suited the romantic tendencies of the day.
