In Cherished Possessions, 2003-2005: Celia Thaxter's creative output as author, poet, and artist is emblematic of the sort of life gifted New England women could lead during the second half of the nineteenth century. Although most of her income derived from her writings, Thaxter also designed greeting cards and decorated ceramics. This vase, thought to have been a gift to her friend, author Sarah Orne Jewett, shows one of Thaxter's favorite subjects, the olive branch. The Greek inscription is from Sophocles, and describes olive trees, watched by the eye of olive-guarding Jove and by gray-eyed Athena.
