"Cherished Possession": This wainscot door reflects the level of refinement that early settlers brought from England. Instead of a simple straight board door hung on leather hinges, this one is constructed of panels set into ornamental rails and is hung from elaborate imported iron hinges.
The door was discovered in the lean-to of the Giddings-Burnham house in Ipswich, Massachusetts. That house, which was built in the 1680s or 1690s, incorporated a number of pieces of an earlier house that was likely on the same property, including a summer beam, joists, and this door.
