One of many views related to the early United States and its history that appear in the online exhibit "Patriotic America."Originally planned as a public reading room with reference and both domestic and international periodicals available to its subscribers, the Boston Athenaeum remains a prominent Boston institution. It has had four homes over its two hundred and four year history, including Congress Street (1807), Common Street (1810), Pearl Street (1822) and 10 1/2 Beacon Street (1849). This view is of its Pearl Street location, the home of Athenaeum trustee (and Boston merchant) James Perkins. Perkins offered his home to the society when it outgrew its Common Street location.
