From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House,: Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Inscribed on the back "A Satyr," this small cabinet picture depicts Silenus, the foster father of Dionysus or Bacchus. Silenus is most often depicted as a jolly old man who is usually intoxicated. This picture may be by Willem van Mieris, a Dutch artist known for his small, detailed compositions.
