From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Ogden Codman bought this large painting in 1868 at the same auction in Boston where he purchased the bust of Psyche. It is a copy of the final painting in a series illustrating the triumphs of Alexander the Great, created between 1661 and 1668 at the request of Louis XIV by the French painter Charles LeBrun. A paper label on the reverse indicates that it originally belonged to Mrs. James Swan, a friend of both John and Richard Codman.
