From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: This painting was a gift from the artist to Ogden Codman shortly after it was painted. It depicts the view across the harbor from Dinard, the town on the northern coast of France where the Codman family had moved in the mid 1870s. Edward Darley Boit was a close friend of the more famous artist John Singer Sargent, who immortalized Boit's four daughters in the well-known painting which is now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
"Artful Stories": After the Great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed much of his real estate holdings Ogden Codman Sr. (18391904) moved his young family to the French seaside resort of Dinard. There the Codmans met artist Edward Darley Boit and his family who also had moved there from Boston. A few years later when the Codmans returned to live in Massachusetts, this painting by Boit came with them.
Although a competent artist himself, Boit is best known for the famous portrait of his daughters painted in Paris by John Singer Sargentnow a beloved treasure at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
