From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: In 1874 Ogden Codman bought two landscapes by J. Foxcroft Cole to hang in the billiard room of the Codman House. According to the bill, this one, entitled Landscape, cost $50. The frame cost an additional $19.50. After studying in France in the 1860s and 1870s, Cole settled in Winchester, Massachusetts in 1877 and was instrumental in introducing the Barbizon School of painting to Boston patrons.
