From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Tom Codman bought 17 paintings from the estate of his aunt Alice Chase. He was probably attracted to this work because it was painted in Dinard, where his family had lived for so many years. Perhaps he had even witnessed similar scenes of men gathering seaweed by the moonlight on the shore of the Gulf of St. Malo. Although the artist was born in Boston, he had lived and painted abroad since 1870. When Codman acquired the painting in 1925, Dana, then 92, was still living in London.
