From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: In 1827, after only four days, 1300 ticket holders had viewed the collection of 317 paintings that had been lent to the first exhibition at the Boston Athenaeum. According to a critic in The North American Review, only 100 of the 165 old master paintings included were genuine. He cited as originals several landscapes by Jacob van Ruisdael, one of which was probably this one lent by Charles Russell Codman. Modern scholars, however, feel that the initials in the lower right corner are not Ruisdael's, but those of a follower, possibly Jan or Saloman Rombouts, whose paintings are often mistaken for those of the more famous artist.
