From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: This view of a village fair is the only painting remaining in the Codman collection listed on the invoice from LeBrun to Richard Codman in 1796. De Marne was a French artist who painted in the tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch artists. LeBrun considered this finely detailed work equal to the best paintings of Adriaen van der Velde and Philip Wouvermans. De Marne, a member of the Academie des Beaux Arts, also painted fine designs on porcelain for the Sevres factory.
