From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Religious paintings, such as this one depicting Adam receiving the forbidden fruit, were plentiful in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Like other collectors of his day, Charles Russell Codman did not distinguish religious imagery from other art forms. Many old master paintings were of Biblical subjects and acquiring them was a mark of sophistication rather than piety.
