Used in Cherished Possessions 2003-2005: By the middle of the eighteenth century, sons of wealthy British families were habitually sent to Italy on the Grand Tour to finish their educations before returning home to take up their lives as culturally literate adults. Only an elite group of young Americans could afford to do the same. This painting is the type of souvenir these young gentlemen brought back from their travels. Richard Codman found this painting in France, where it may well have been just such a souvenir. Between 1794 and 1797, Codman was in France, taking advantage of political upheaval during the French Revolution by buying up works of art confiscated from or abandoned by wealthy families. Galli-Bibiena was one of the many Italian painters who produced architectural views for purchase by young gentlemen traveling on the Grand Tour.
