From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Ernest Longfellow, son of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was a patron of the arts as well as a painter. After studying in Paris, he traveled extensively. Many of the places he visited provided the subjects for his paintings. This view of Vesuvius was purchased by Theodore Chase, an uncle of the Codmans, to hang in the music room of his Beacon Street house.
