From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Richard Codman purchased this copy of a painting by Claude Joseph Vernet along with nine other paintings from a dealer named Brunot in Paris on September 14, 1794. Vernet was the premier marine painter in Europe in the mid eighteenth century and his works were well known to Americans through imported prints. This painting is typical of Vernet's popular moonlit water views.
