From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Small landscape paintings have always appealed to collectors. The dunes, clumps of trees and winding road seen in this painting are characteristic of the landscapes of Johannes Wynants, who worked both in Haarlem and in Amsterdam in the late seventeenth century. The costume of the soldier, however, indicates that the painting was probably done at a later date, in the style of Wynants.
