Description

FAN (A): Folding fan with thirteen sticks and two guard sticks of tortoise shell; base of stick is notched and curved [or carved?]; kidskin mount is painted on one side with scenic view of shepherd and woman with dog (at center), a shepherd with sheep at right, and view of castles, mountain and ships in the distance; scrolling gilt border; reverse side painted with three medallions on a cream ground: round medallion shows Chinese woman outside, leaning on a tree, with longhaired black and white dog; oval medallion shows two Chinese women outside, with brown bird flying above; square medallion shows two peacock feathers, a scroll, a vase and a pole with tassel (or lure?); handle has rivet with one rhinestone (perhaps other is missing). BOX (B): Black paper, fan shape; paper hinges; blue paper lining, two metal clasps--one is missing hook closure.
