Label

Label "Waiting for a Gallery": After graduating from Harvard in 1760, John Lowell pursued an active career in local and national politics. He married Susanna Cabot in 1774. James Sharples, an English srtist, worked in the United States for only seven years, between 1793 and 1801.

Inscription

In ink on frame backing: ""This picture was painted by Sharples/ September 1796"" Fragment of label attached to back of frame: ""I Sig/ for/ (by?) (Sigl?)/ us to/ I gaze, but tis on him/ Returns no smile of t(h?)/ I speak, but tis to him/ No mortal (souls?) (can?)/ For far from (e?) (with?) to/ My thoughts a/ (ive?)"" In upper left corner of frame, where backing is removed is the remnant of a red and white sticker. A similar sticker is on 1996.31.2, the companion to this portrait, and indicates that object was on temporary loan to the M.F.A. Watermark/paper stamp on verso of picture: ""SULLY./ PICK./ COLLETTE.""
